about.

Howest wanted a new website. Not outsourced. Not fully handed over. They wanted to build and maintain it themselves. The assignment was therefore different from a classic redesign.

We had to modernise the digital presence while creating a system their internal team could confidently use and expand.

challenge

Howest has a broad audience:

  • Future students exploring courses

  • Current students looking for practical information

  • Staff and faculty

  • External partners

Each course also wanted its own identity and story.

At the same time, the internal team needed autonomy. The system had to be flexible enough for variation, yet structured enough to avoid chaos.

The challenge was finding the balance between freedom and consistency.

how did i get there

result.

We created a future-proof design system delivered entirely in Figma.

The system included:

  • Nested components with clear states and variations

  • Section-based templates for common page types

  • Predefined content structures with flexible “slots”

  • Clear usage guidelines to support internal teams

We respected the existing branding but refined typography, spacing and hierarchy to create a more modern and accessible interface.

Students can now find information faster through clearer navigation and structured content. At the same time, each course can build inspiring pages without breaking the overall identity.

The result is not just a website.
It is a system that enables Howest to evolve independently.
